Some time ago i worked for modelling bureaus (at that time mostly in Germany) and i got asked if somebody could be a model.

Il arrive des fois qu'on me demande si une personne pourrait être un bon modèle. Avec un peu d'expérience on voit directement si la personne a un potentiel ou pas, il suffit de regarder son profil instagram. Si sur une des photos on voit un WC, c'est mal parti.

Mais ce profil qui semble prometteur n'est pas nécessairement interessant pour une agence. Il n'y aura que les fausses agences qui sont interessées, "venez vous inscrire chez nous, c'est à peine 350€ pour l'inscription dans notre catalogue..."

Pourquoi n'est-il pas interessant pour une vraie agence? Parce qu'il n'a qu'un seul profil. Sur toutes les photos c'est pratiquement le même visage, la même coupe de cheveux. C'est la même personne auquelle on a mis un t-shirt vert, puis bleu, puis blanc. Son visage n'est absolument pas expressif, on aurait pû habiller un modèle en plâtre.

Je n'ai fait qu'un shooting avec lui, d'abord parce qu'il ne voulait pas poser torse nu, mais aussi parce qu'il n'a publié aucune de mes photos de lui. Je ne dirais pas qu'il ait une forte idée de lui-même, mais il a des demandes qui font que toutes les photos ont le même style. Certains photographes adorent ce style, mais pas moi.

J'ai fait quelques photos de lui (voir exemple à droite). Cela a été tout un problème de lui mettre une casquette et un look vraiment bad boy n'était pas possible.

Soms vragen mensen me of iemand een goed model zou kunnen zijn. Met een beetje ervaring kun je meteen zien of iemand potentie heeft of niet; je hoeft alleen maar naar zijn instagramprofiel te kijken. Als een toilet op één van de foto's staat, is dat al einde verhaal.

Maar zo'n ogenschijnlijk veelbelovend profiel (eerste foto rechts) is niet interessant voor een modellenbureau. Alleen nepbureaus zouden geïnteresseerd zijn: "Schrijf je bij ons in, het kost amper 350€ om in onze catalogus te staan..."

Waarom is hij niet interessant voor een echt bureau? Omdat het maar één beeld is. Op alle foto's is het praktisch hetzelfde gezicht, hetzelfde kapsel. Het is dezelfde persoon, maar dan met een groen T-shirt, dan een blauw, dan een wit. Zijn gezicht is volledig uitdrukkingsloos; de fotograaf had evengoed een gipsen model kunnen aankleden.

Ik heb maar één fotoshoot met hem gedaan, ten eerste omdat hij niet zonder shirt wilde poseren, maar ook omdat hij geen van mijn foto's van hem heeft gepubliceerd. Ik zou niet zeggen dat hij een hoge dunk van zichzelf heeft, maar hij stelt wel eisen waardoor alle foto's dezelfde stijl moeten hebben. Sommige fotografen vinden die stijl geweldig, maar ik niet.

Ik heb wel een paar foto's van hem gemaakt (zie voorbeeld rechts). Het was een hele uitdaging om hem een pet te laten dragen, en een echte bad-boy-look was niet mogelijk.

I get asked if a certain person would make a good model. With a little experience, you can tell right away whether someone has potential—you just have to look at their instagram profile. If there’s a toilet visible in one of the photos, it’s the end of the story.

But a profile that looks promising isn't necessarily interesting to an agency. Only fake agencies would be interested—the kind that say, "Come sign up with us; it’s barely 350€ to get listed in our catalog..."

Why isn't he interesting to a real agency? Because the subject has only one "look." In every photo, it’s practically the same face and the same hairstyle. It’s the same person, just wearing a green T-shirt, then a blue one, then a white one. His face is completely expressionless; you could have just as easily dressed up a plaster cast (and you don't need to feed it).

I only did one shoot with him, partly because he refused to pose shirtless, but also because he didn't post any of the photos I took of him. I wouldn't say he has an inflated ego, but he has specific demands that result in every photo having the same style. Some photographers love that style, but I don't.

I took a few photos of him (see the example on the right). Getting him to wear a baseball cap was a real hassle, and achieving a true "bad boy" look was out of the question.
